Should I rent my second home out as a vacation rental?

I have a second home that I'm thinking about turning into a vacation rental.

Renting out a vacation home is a major personal step, and requires a good deal of two main things: logistical preparation and trust. The vacation rental logistics are myriad; though vacation home renting is a relatively hands-off way to make money, you'll need to figure out best practices for marketing, maintenance and bookkeeping. That said, though, you could hypothetically hire someone to do all that for you. The trust issue is something else altogether, and requires you to think seriously about letting others live in your home. Some homeowners feel safer when their vacation homes are lived in, because it prevents the odds of burglaries.
